Inky black backgrounds with sweet flowers cushioned within the dark by Chicago-based tattooer Esther Garcia are today’s topic. Garden roses, butterflies, and birds bring life contrast to the long sleeves. Mostly self-taught with twenty years of experience as tattoo artist Garcia stands out with her artistic approach and botanical designs. What makes her little less excited are the cover-ups, yet these types of tats are perfect for those in need. Garcia shares: “I found it meditative and very enjoyable to make a smooth saturated surface where there was chaos before, but pretty soon I was looking for ways to make it a bit more ornamental. I am very influenced by Dutch master paintings of lush florals and fruit, and I love the depth and richness that a dark background offers. It turns out to be a great way to evoke delicacy in a tattoo, and doesn’t need to involve cover-ups at all.” Most importantly, everyone in the world is welcome as a client, no matter who you are, Garcia would love to meet you!
