“Cups for the Future” – Gourd Drinking Vessels – Compostable, Without Waste

“Cups for the Future” can easily fix a lot of wrongs in today’s world. Jun Aizaki is a designer and owner of CRÈME and a man who came up with an idea to reduce the single-use plastic waste by growing gourds in vessel-shaped molds to be later used as cups and flasks and more. The Brooklyn-based designer, Aizaki aims to give our contaminated waterways and landscapes a chance for regeneration by creating an alternative for plastic takeaway cups and packagings. Using fast-growing plants – gourds – that develop strong outer skin, yet have fibery inner flesh. Exploring the centuries-old crafts of drying gourds used as cups, CRÈME came up with the idea that uses functional-shaped molds to create different sustainable, renewable, and compostable products without waste. From nature to nature, the project goes full circle and is especially important during these pandemic times as the use of plastic products increases drastically. These gourd cups can hold both hot and cold liquids, and they can be reused 3 to 6 times before being composted with other food waste. Each drinking vessel takes about 6 weeks to be grown from the moment of its planting (at a Pennsylvania farm). A beautiful way to reduce plastic waste and contribute to nature by CRÈME.
