Using vintage materials for her peculiar mask creations Magnhild Kennedy has built a name for herself on Instagram. Known as ‘Damselfrau’, a self-taught artist just keeps on learning new sewing techniques. Masks constructed with mesh netting, sequinned appliques, ribbons, beads, and pompoms are becoming more and more popular on the artist’s Instagram. The only part uncovered and transparent is the part around her eyes. Her clothes are always patterned in similar colors as the mask. The background is always subtle almost blank, but the artist insists that there are no specific meanings to her art. It is all left to the viewers to decide. Her artistic career started as a fluke as likes to call it. Looking for something unique to wear to clubs she made her first mask. Born in an artistic household, she spent last decade perfecting her skills and her mask gained her worldwide recognition through Instagram. Domestic environments are what she says where inspiration comes from. “I’m inspired by people’s homes and how they live with their objects around them. I often feel like I’m decorating a space, more than making a mask.”
