Devastating Winter/Ice Storm in Texas (February 2021) Power Outage, Insurance Claims, and Casualties

Texas felt the temperature drop down to the 6F (-14C) during the February 13–17, 2021 North American winter stormIt was also an ice storm, with widespread impacts across the United States, Northern Mexico, and parts of Canada. In 1899 Texas had experienced the coldest weather in their history while this year’s storm was the second coldest. The worst part was the failure of Texas’ power grid, leaving 3.5 million people without power, freezing in the dark. Water pipes were frozen, and homes had no heat, leading to more than 50 deaths, and the exact number of casualties is still unknown. Criticism was obvious towards the operation of the state’s power grid, and some of the possible reasons why it failed, was that due to cold weather residents were cranking up their electric heaters pushing the demand for electricity beyond the worst-case scenarios that the grid operators had in mind, or believed it could ever happen. A mistake that led to horrifying aftermath. Texas’ farmers lost almost their entire crop during the winter storm. The devastating impact on farming communities, as well as other businesses in the entire state, bursting water pipes, insurance claims, power outages, all brought the economic toll above $150 billion and it’s still rising.
